Born in 1887, Ms. Hongo was recognized as the oldest by the Guinness Book of Records after an American Maude Farris-Luse died in March at 115.

Ms. Hongo had been hospitalized in Kagoshima, on the southern island of Kyushu, after complaining of loss of appetite and fever. Ms. Hongo was reared on a small island on southern fringe. She symbolized the graying of society a trend that elicits both pride and concern.

Japan has the longest life expectancy. Until a few weeks ago, the oldest documented man was also Japanese 114- year-old Yukichi Chuganji. He died Sept. 29. Associated Press.
