Delegates Neutral By The Associated Press The New South figured prominently in the workings of both the Republican and Democratic presidential campaigns on Sunday. Mississippi's 30-vote Republican delegation decided to remain uncommitted until the national convention next month, despite intensive lobbying efforts by supporters both President Ford and challenger Ronald Reagan. The Mississippi delegatesthe only full delegation which has not indicated a preference also voted to cast its 30 votes as a bloc for one candidate. There was no clear indication which man they would choose. Both camps have claimed strong support.
Nationally, Ford has 1,096 delegates and Reagan has 024, according to a survey by The Associated Press. It takes 1,130 to win the nomination. There are 138 uncommitted delegates. Both Ford and Reagan have claimed they have enough votes to win the nomination. Meanwhile, Reagan planned to make "a major campaign statement" Monday, his aides said, but none of them would discuss the subject.
However, one aide said it would be "a positive statement" for the campaign. Fire Losses In S.C. Decrease COLUMBIA (AP)-Forest fire losses across South Carolina were held down during June due to rainfall averaging 3.52 inches above normal. Asst. State Forester John Shirer said only 52 fires burned 146 acres during the month.
Despite the good month, the fiscal year proved to be the worst forest fire year since 1967-68 when 103,431 acres were burned. Horry County had the most acres burned with a 33,627 acre total during the fiscal year. Shirer said that during the past 12 months, a record total of 8,899 wildfires burned 75,185 acres of woodland. "This is the greatest number of wildfires occurring in a fiscal year since we began keeping records," he said. Four Die In S.C.
Accidents By The Associated Press Four persons have been killed on South Carolina highways so far this weekend, according to the State Highway Patrol. James Edward Stogner, 18, of Lancaster, S.C., was killed about 12:01 a.m. Sunday when the car in which he was riding struck another outside Lancaster in Lancaster County. John Clarence Ware, Augusta, was killed Saturday evening when his car left the road and sunk in a pond in Aiken County. Brannan Griner, 10, of North Augusta, S.C., was also killed Saturday evening when the motorbike he was riding was struck by a car near Belvedere, S.C.
Thelma Jenkins Evans, 46, of Orangeburg, S.C., was killed about 4:10 a.m. Sunday when the car in which she was riding hit a tree on I-26 in Orangeburg County. My Answer By BILLY GRAHAM Evangelist DEAR DR. GRAHAM: Did Jesus carry His own cross when He was led away to die? If so, is there any significance in W.M. DEAR MRS. The account found in the Gospel of John indicates that Jesus was compelled to carry His own cross (which would have been extremely heavy- toward the place of His execution (John Matthew, Mark and Luke all indicate that at some stage on the road the soldiers forced "one Simon a Cyrenian, the who passed country, by, the coming father out of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross" (Mark Possibly this was necessary because of Jesus' weakened condition after having been beaten. I think this incident is significant because it demonstrates the suffering of Jesus for us.
We can better understand the statement of Isaiah: "He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrowos, and acquainted with was oppressed, and was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth" (Isaiah Jesus' suffering, however, was not just limited to the physical pain and public humiliation He had to endure. Most of all, Jesus suffered on the cross because He was bearing our sins and the sins of the world. He did this out of love, that we might know forgiveness and salvation through faith in Him.
